The Tri-State still carries the footprint of mining.
Southwestern Indiana, Southern Illinois, and Western Kentucky contain thousands of acres shaped by decades of surface and underground mining. Some of that land is now forest. Some is grassland. Some contains pits, lakes, wetlands, wildlife areas, farms, or industrial ground.
But green does not automatically mean recovered.
Soil compaction, invasive plants, altered drainage, limited native seed sources, simplified vegetation, and fragmented habitat can continue influencing these sites long after mining equipment disappears.
That makes former mine land one of the region’s biggest ecological experiments — whether anyone intended it to be one or not.

Stable Landform
Dangerous features are corrected and erosion or physical instability is controlled.
Growing Medium
Soil or mine spoil can support roots, water, nutrients, and plant establishment.
Vegetation
Plants establish and persist instead of simply providing temporary ground cover.
Habitat Structure
Vegetation develops the cover, layers, diversity, and resources wildlife needs.
Ecological Function
Soil, plants, water, wildlife, and natural processes begin functioning together again.

The history is connected, but geology, mining practices, land ownership, reclamation history, and current habitat differ from one part of the region to another.
Southwestern Indiana
Former coal lands now support wildlife areas, forests, grasslands, wetlands, lakes, agriculture, and private property. Blue Grass and Sugar Ridge provide especially useful examples of how mining history continues influencing habitat management.
Southern Illinois
Coal production, reclaimed ground, agricultural land, public habitat, and forest restoration overlap across Southern Illinois. Future LWR reporting will examine how these sites are being managed decades after disturbance.
Western Kentucky
Western Kentucky adds another piece to the regional mining story, including extensive coal lands, public wildlife areas, reclaimed properties, and long-term questions about soil, forest establishment, water, and habitat recovery.
